Experience

I am currently working as a professional online math and statistics tutor for Brandman University. A little after a year later, from earning my Master's degree in Mathematics Education, I began working for Brandman University in February of 2016. During my time at Brandman, I have tutored adult students in algebra, geometry, and statistics. As well as create over 30 learning workshops. Additionally, I have worked as a math and English teacher for several Best Brains learning centers assisting students ranging from 3 years of age to ninth grade. My strategies kept students on-task with proactive behavior modification and positive reinforcement. I also have work experience supporting student teachers by mentoring on small group management, lesson planning and activity organization. I have years of experience working with high school students. Whether it be from when I started tutoring beginning in my undergraduate years (2000) or teaching at both Central Academy (January of 2018 to May of 2019) and Cabrini High School (August 2008 to May of 2011). Courses included pre-algebra, algebra 1, geometry, and pre-calculus. Two main methodologies that I always focused on within my classroom were collaborative instruction and differentiated problem solving techniques. I always welcomed varies solutions and encouraged peer-support during classwork. I find it not only keeps the students engaged and more willing to work, but it unlocks a creativity in my students that I admire. In addition, I have worked at Oakland Community College (OCC) of Southfield, as a math tutor from September of 2006 to May of 2017, specifically working with students who have learning disabilities. During my time at OCC I created and taught Math Proficiency Test seminars averaging 15 potential nursing students, COMPASS Placement Test seminars, and motivated students towards learning and studying to build self-confidence and reduce fear of failure. Lastly, I have worked at Davenport University, from August of 2012 to September of 2016, as an on-campus and online math tutor and math instructor. The subjects in which I have tutored for over the course of 15+ years include: arithmetic, pre-algebra, algebra 1 and 2, college algebra, geometry, finite mathematics, pre-calculus, and statistics. You ask why I wanted to become a math tutor, and I don’t think I became one, I was destined to be one and through experience with my students, I developed into an exceptional one. The very least, I made some fantastic friends, some that our life-long friends. As a bonus, it made me more patient, self-aware, and able to grow as a person.

Hobbies

I think I have a positively, unique personality. There have always been two distinct descriptions that I have received from my students or clients. One: I have the patience of a saint and a voice that is very soothing and almost hypnotizing. Second: I have an upbeat, positively enthusiastic energy that just makes you happy to do math again. When you think about it, I can be upbeat and challenge your perhaps bored student or maybe yourself just likes a bubbly personality. Or I can go as slow as needed and repeating myself as often as necessary. Whatever your pace needs, I will meet it because I will literally ask you "Am I moving too quickly." Also, I love being a math geek. It is the greatest compliment anyone could give me. I love to be upbeat and use humor as a tool to help relax my students and make the learning experience fun versus a painful task. Anytime my student is struggling I congratulate them, because during my graduate studies at Concordia I read that struggling is a symptom of true learning. I encourage ALL of my students, no matter their academic level, to find their own solutions. I will simply be their math geek for guidance when needed to point them in the right direction. If you just want a tutor who will give quick answers, then you are in the wrong place. But, if you want a tutor that promotes understanding, mastery of content, and an applicable connection to the real world either throughout history, the media, statistics...then send me a message and let's chat about how I can meet your specific needs and get you loving math again.
